When asked who is the most powerful person in the world in the last two centuries, most would refer to the American presidents of their respective eras. Military strength and economic resources have given American presidents such legitimacy. Although the 44 American presidents the world has seen so far have left their mark in different ways, only a few of them have brought about the major changes the world needs; they sought glory for mankind. Chief among them was Abraham Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln was self-educated, graduated as a lawyer, became a member of the state and federal legislature and was eventually elected the 16th President of the United States. He is considered by many historians to be the supreme president of the United States.

Books were scarce in that wilderness. Abraham walked many miles and read books at night. Robinson Crusoe loved to read the stories of Pilgrims Progress and Esau.

SOCIAL CONCERN:

Abraham, a young boy, had grown up when he immigrated to Illinois in 1830. With a height of six feet and a majestic physique, Lincoln found work easily. He did various jobs there as a postman, land surveyor and shop owner. His social involvement and concern earned Lincoln a good reputation among the people of the area.

When he lived in New Orleans he saw a black man in the name of slavery being sold for a price, tied up with iron rods, beaten with a whip, and tortured en masse. He was then fifteen years old. At that moment he decided to get rid of this slavery somehow.

At the age of 22, he joined an office as a clerk. He then bought a shop on credit and lost business. Next became the postman.

After that he studied for himself and became a lawyer. In 1834, at the age of 25, he ran for and won the Illinois State Legislature.

In 1833 he fell in love with Ann Rutledge and married her. But within two years Ann Vishal died of fever. He remarried a woman named Mary Todd at the age of 33, and later had four children.
